JAKARTA, Indonesia — Only six of the 16 best teams from around the world participating at the 2024 Honor of Kings Championship remain to vie for the crown and the lion’s share of the US$1 million prize pool.
The start of the 2024 Honor of Kings Championship saw plenty of upsets. Top-seeded team Black Shrew Esport unexpectedly fell to second place in Group D, losing to Hong Kong squad Fearless Esports HK. Myanmar’s Impunity and Singapore’s Revenant Esports failed to progress in the tournament as they were in the bottom two.
Meanwhile, Indonesian squad Mahadewa and FUT Esports from Turkey failed to make it out of Group A. But it was Group A’s Dominator Esports from Indonesia that surprised fans with their dominating performance, going 3-0 to take first place in Group A while Filipino pride Blacklist International came in second.
In Group B, Malaysia’s Nova Esports swept the competition 3-0, while Saudi Arabia’s Team Falcons placed second. French squad Team Vitality and Indonesia’s Kagendra failed to make the cut and were eliminated from the tournament.
In Group C, there were no surprises. Team Secret performed up to expectations, taking the group 3-0, while Boom Esports secured second. Sadly, both Latin American representatives, Brazil’s Alpha7 Esports and Influence Rage, were knocked out after placing third and fourth respectively.
Upsets and comebacks rocked the playoffs
In the early rounds of the knockout playoffs stage, Team Secret got upset by Blacklist International, who beat them 3-2 in a back and forth series. Then, Team Secret faced Team Falcons, who lost 1-3 against Dominator Esports in the lower bracket, before sweeping them 3-0 to stay in the competition.
Fearless Esports HK showed their mettle and why they are one of the teams to watch as they easily defeated Boom Esports. The latter then had to face Nova Esports in the lower brackets.
Nova Esports had to go against Black Shrew Esport in the upper bracket, and were ahead 2-1 before Black Shrew Esport found their footing to beat them 3-2. Unfortunately for Boom Esports, their run ended in the lower bracket as Nova Esports proved too strong, beating them 3-1.
The playoffs continued with the upper bracket semifinals. Dominator Esports flew the Indonesian flag high with an easy 3-0 trouncing of Blacklist International, while Black Shrew Esport got their revenge with a 3-2 victory over Fearless Esports HK, sending them down to the lower bracket quarterfinals.
