Community director chat: How Warframe built its fiercely loyal fanbase

How do you get players coming back for more after 11 years? That’s something the community head of Warframe knows something about.

The Digital Extremes title is one of the granddaddies of role-playing multiplayer online games. It’s not only kept longtime players coming back for more; new players discovering the game join and stick around for more.

We spoke to Warframe‘s community director Megan Everett on the sidelines of the studio’s annual TennoCon show in its home base of London, Ontario, Canada. This year’s was the biggest yet, with over 3,000 fans attending in person, with hundreds of thousands more tuning into the stream online.

The Warframe community, which first started with forum-based interactions and in-game chats, now enjoys interactive streaming sessions with the developers. The instant reactions from community viewers and recognizable returning developers has only strengthened their bond, allowing friendships to flourish.

This connection was evident at Tennocon 2024, where returning faces filled the hallways. The RBC Convention Center, which initially hosted the event in a single room, now sees attendees lining up outside and spilling into expanded spaces, including the parking lot.

Digital Extremes continues to add content to Warframe as it streamlines the gameplay experience to make it more accessible for new players. With its highly anticipated Warframe: 1999 expansion set to release this winter, newcomers will find it easier to pick up and jump into the latest chapter.
