Digital Extremes expands Warframe universe with free 1999 prequel comic

Warframe continues to expand its rich universe today with a new digital comic that sets up its upcoming Warframe: 1999 expansion.

Digital Extremes, the developer behind the long-running free-to-play sci-fi game, has partnered with community artist Karu to create a 33-page prequel comic that introduces players to an exciting new chapter in the game’s sprawling narrative.

Uncover the origins of the Protoframes

The comic follows six individuals whose lives are forever changed by the mysterious experiments of scientist Albrecht Entrati. As these unlikely allies band together to seek revenge against their tormentor, they forge unexpected bonds that will shape their destiny.

This story serves as a foundation for Warframe: 1999, the upcoming expansion that promises to take the game in bold new directions.

Alongside the comic release, Digital Extremes has unveiled a new trailer showcasing the Protoframes—powerful mechanical suits that these characters will eventually pilot in their quest for justice.

More ways to enjoy the webcomic

For those looking to dive into the story, the webcomic is freely available across multiple platforms, including the official Warframe website, Tapas Canvas, Imgur, and Webtoon.

Warframe players can also bring a piece of the comic into their game, with the cover art now available as a free decoration for their in-game landing crafts.

In a unique move to engage with the crafting community, Digital Extremes has partnered with Hoku Props to release 3D-printable models of the Protoframes, allowing fans to create their own physical representations of these new characters.

The full reveal of Warframe: 1999 is set for The Game Awards on December 12, 2024, where Digital Extremes will announce the expansion’s release date.

Viewers who tune in to the official Game Awards Twitch channel can earn a free Nyx Warframe by watching for 30 minutes with their linked accounts. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. ET.

For the latest updates, fans can visit the official Warframe:1999 website or follow the game on Twitter/X, Instagram, YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok.
