How we put Exoborne and Dune: Awakening’s devs into their games for Gamescom 2024

COLOGNE, Germany — There was a rumble of excitement coming from the crowd on Wednesday night at the Level Infinite booth. They were there for the premiere of Level Infinite’s special showcase prepared for Gamescom 2024.

Together with a stacked reveal of 15 trailers, the showcase drew a collective gasp as Petter Mannerfelt, creative director of Exoborne, walked through the apocalyptic wasteland of his game.

Later, Dune: Awakening creative director, Joel Bylos, stood on a rock in the middle of a cave in Arrakis and talked about the making of Funcom’s much-anticipated title.

This movie magic was achieved by a volume virtual production set involving a huge curved LED wall spanning 34m and going up 6m high.

Powered by the Unreal Engine, the backdrop is synced to the camera’s movement and allows perspective changes of the background as the camera changes angles.

Essentially, this allows for a seamless blend of the foreground set into the background, allowing nearly any scene to become reality.
